Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.

The St. James Center for Spiritual Formation

CSF Logo

We are all on a spiritual journey—a journey to understand how to love God with all our heart, mind and strength and love our neighbor as ourselves. The mission of the Center for Spiritual Formation is Providing food for the journey. Our charge is to provide programs of spiritual nourishment for adults. We do that by offering a variety of opportunities for prayer, study and service.

Recurring Programs

Adult education special programs are part of what we provide through the Center.

Some of our programs have included:

  • a series on the liturgical seasons, taught by our clergy, on what to expect and why we use certain colors, songs and prayers for that season.
  • a series on pilgrimage where clergy and laity in our church share their experiences of pilgrimage to the Holy Land, to Santiago de Compestela, to Ireland and to Bolivia.
  • a series on our service in the world offering us a view of Stephen Ministry, prison ministry and ministry to the homeless and hungry by those who are actively and prayerfully engaged in these ministries.

Check our front page, or our weekly newsletters for current offerings not outlined, here.

Some find music is a way to encounter the divine. The Summer Sounds at St. James program provides quality musical performances in a variety of genres every Wednesday in July. This is also a chance for us to share the beauty of our worship space and the hospitality of our St. James congregation with those outside our parish family.

Meditative Yoga, in relaxed styles accessible to almost everyone, is offered twice monthly, in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center at St. James. Margaret Culbertson leads sessions on the third and fourth Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. These classes are free and open to all interested.

During Lent, we have offered retreats, and, during the ECW Friday Gumbo Lunches, we have hosted the Fr. John Moloney Preaching Series with guest preachers from the Baton Rouge community and from the Diocese. Parishioners and guests can enjoy lunch in Bishops Hall either before or after the presentation in the church at 12:05 p.m.

It is through the generous stewardship of St. James Episcopal Church and its parishioners that The Center can provide all of these programs, some of which would not happen without your contribution. The Board of the Center for Spiritual Formation thanks you for your financial support of St. James Episcopal Church that allows us to continue to offer these programs. We especially thank you on behalf of all those who are not members of our church, but who receive a blessing from what your generosity affords.
